Students to study houses before they’re burned

WORDEN — A couple of houses across the street from Huntley Project Schools will become a temporary learning lab before the property becomes a parking lot.

The school district bought the property from the Dassinger family. Superintendent Mark Wandle said the purchase was finalized last Friday.

The property includes two houses that have been rental properties.  The Dassinger family donated a larger shop building on the lot to the Huntley Project Museum of Irrigated Agriculture and it was moved to the museum grounds in 2012.

Wandle said this week that students are going to salvage materials from the two houses and possibly   study design and construction techniques used in the homes. The salvaged materials will be used in art or shop projects, he said.

When that process is complete, the Worden Volunteer Fire Department will burn the two buildings, using the opportunity for training. Wandle said school district officials had looked into moving the two houses off the site but it wasn’t feasible.
