Primary Ballots Reveal Record Setting Voter Participation

Early returns of ballots indicate that this primary presidential election may be one of the biggest in terms of voter participation – and it may be a record setter, reported Bret Rutherford, Director of Elections for Yellowstone County on Wednesday. Due to the coronavirus concerns this year’s Primary is a mail-ballot election – there are no polls available.

While a legal battle is unfolding about ballot deadlines, Rutherford urges voters to act on the side of caution and mail their ballots early – no later than June 1. In a case that is challenging the law regarding the deadline for ballots, a lower court ruling that ballots must be accepted until June 8, could yet be overturned by a higher court, Rutherford pointed out.

As of Wednesday morning, Rutherford said they had about 35,500 ballots returned of the approximately 86,000 ballots mailed out.

Rutherford said that the daily return is running about 200 above the Primary in 2016 – about 8,000 ballots ahead of the 2016 election, but is still a little under the record-setting year of 2018.
