Officer-Involved Fatal Shooting in Billings

On Monday, October 12, 2020, at about 10:20 PM, officers with the Billings Police Department were dispatched to the 2200 block of Avenue C for suspicious activity. The caller stated that three individuals arrived in two different cars and were acting suspiciously in the complex covered-parking area in the alley. Upon the officers’ arrival, they contacted three suspects to identify them and find out what they were doing.

As they approached one suspect to question him, he was uncooperative, leading to the officers attempting to get control of the situation by attempting to pat him down for weapons and place him in handcuffs for safety purposes. The suspect continued to refuse to cooperate and comply with instructions, and an altercation ensued. During the altercation, the officers and suspect ended up on the ground as officers attempted to place handcuffs on the suspect. The suspect continued to struggle and refused to get his hands out from under his body. One officer used his taser to no effect.

The suspect was then able to pull a semi-automatic gun from his waistband area and point it at the officers. Another officer observed the gun and shouted a warning to the others. The officers disengaged and drew their weapons, firing multiple rounds. The suspect was secured, and officers provided first aid until medical responders arrived. He was transported by ambulance to a local medical facility for treatment of gunshot wounds, where he died.
