Obituary: Scott Charles Smith

Scott Charles Smith

Scott Charles Smith was born on January 27, 1970, to Charles Smith and Helen (McCarthy) Smith in Windom, Minnesota.

He was baptized on February 8, 1970, at St. Francis Xavier Church in Windom, Minnesota, by Rev. Thomas M Ploof. He was confirmed on May 20, 1989, at Sacred Heart in Murdock by Bishop Raymond Lucker. Scott grew up in Windom, Eagan/Burnsville area and moved to Ballantine, Montana, October of 1982 at age 12 and graduated from Huntley Project High School in May of 1988. After graduating high school, he moved to Benson and lived on the Smith family farm with his grandmother and attended Willmar Tech where he graduated in 1990 with a degree in Welding. On November 11, 1995, he was united in marriage to Susan Nagler at St. Bridget’s Catholic Church in DeGraff, Minnesota, by Fr. Steve Verhelst. This union blessed them with their two children, Dylan and Jenna.

Scott worked hard his whole life. When he lived in Montana, he worked for several families either milking cows or helping with field work.  His second family in Montana was the Willy and Loretta Oblender family.  Scott helped them with irrigating crops and field work.  He lived with their son Kent who was like a brother to him. When his grandfather died in 1988, Scott moved back to Minnesota after graduation to live with his grandmother on the Smith Farm and started farming and helped neighboring farmers. Scott worked for Supreme Pet Food / Hubbard Milling, DeGraff Elevator, Klassen Repair & Welding, Gary Chevalier Farms, Connelly Farms, Redball and various other jobs. If you needed work done, Scott would be the first to help out. Scott enjoyed farming, fishing, hunting, morning coffee at Al’s, making his daily “welfare” calls checking on everyone, and most of all enjoyed time spent with his family.

Scott served on the DeGraff Fire Department (Fire Chief), Torning Township Board, Swift County Fair Board, Swift County 4-H Volunteer, DeGraff Cemetery Committee, and the Knights of Columbus. Scott always loved to help out wherever he could.
