Milton John Kinghorn

Milton John Kinghorn, 84, of Shepherd, Montana, died July 10, 2024, at home with his family. He was born May 26, 1940, in Billings, Montana, to John and Hattie Kinghorn. He was the oldest of four children. Milt was a lifetime resident of Shepherd, Montana, and graduated from Shepherd High School in 1959. He married Marjorie Clair Duckwitz on August 2, 1963, in Billings, Montana.

In the early years, Milton worked as a ranch hand and drove water truck. In 1966 he started work at Rector Cattle Company, where he remained for 26 years. After retiring from Rectors, he drove truck over the road with Steve Nelson Trucking and worked at Western Sugar running front end loader.

Milton was one of the founding members of the Shepherd Volunteer Fire Department, which started in 1966. He served the Shepherd community with the department for 20 years as a fireman and one- time fire chief.

He loved and taught his family to love the outdoors, backpacking, rafting, hunting and fishing lakes and rivers throughout Montana. Music had a constant presence in the Kinghorn home, and he fostered a love of a variety of music, dancing, playing cards, good conversation and laughter with everyone he met. Milton said more than once, there are no strangers, just friends you haven’t met yet.

Milton was proceeded in death by his parents and two children, Joel Arnold and Holly Lynn.

He is survived by his wife Marjorie of Shepherd; son John Kinghorn of Shepherd; daughter Heather (David) Brenden of Billings; son in law Sean Pearson of Billings; sisters Linda (Ron) Hossfeld of Sheridan, Wyoming, Twyla Sherman of Billings and Lori Davidson of Billings; and 10 grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am, with a viewing at 10 am on Thursday, July 18 at Smith Funeral Chapel Downtown in Billings with burial at Emmanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery and a reception following at Roadside Event Center in Huntley, Montana.
