Obituary: Marvin A. Steadman

Marvin A. Steadman

Marvin A. Steadman, 88, passed away in his home after a long illness.

Marvin was born in Broadus, MT, on April 17, 1933, to James Milton Steadman and Anona Pearl Macy.

As a boy, Marvin wanted to be a cowboy. He realized his dream at 14 and 15 years old when he rode saddle broncs in the local rodeo. The rodeo paid him $5 to ride the horses out of the chute. During his rodeo years, Marvin became fast friends with the Greenoughs and Lindermans. Even though he rode for only two years, Marvin had many fond memories of his time spent on the rodeo circuit.

When Marvin was 17 years old, he enlisted in the United States Navy. After three months of boot camp, Marvin was sent to North Korea where he was part of a unit called the Sitting Ducks of Inchon. He spent three years serving our country. He was very proud of being a Korean War veteran and serving with his brothers and sisters in arms.

After serving in the Navy, Marvin went on to Oregon where he met Professor Hendrik Ourtyes. Professor Ourtyes taught electronics at the Oregon State Prison where Marvin was his assistant.  Marvin claimed that this man changed his entire life.  He had encouraged Marvin to attend Oregon State College, where Marvin finished with a 3.6 GPA.

While in Oregon, Marvin met and married the love of his life, Virgene Lee Bliss Hallman, on September 24, 1972.  With this union, Marvin became dad and step-dad to seven children:  Dan, Rusty, Tim, Tedd, Darick, Rebecca and son Adam.

After several years in Oregon, Marvin and Gini moved to Montana with their son Adam. They settled in Joliet, MT, where Marvin opened a TV repair business out of their home.

Marvin was an avid hunter and fisherman; he took many of us hunting and fishing with him.  He has so much fishing equipment, he could open up a store.

Marvin took a job with Crash, Fire and Rescue at the Billings Logan International Airport.  He worked there as an Air Rescue Firefighter for thirteen years, retired and became a union Business Agent for the City of Billings.  His years at the airport made him many friends and gave him a lot of experience in the value of human life.

Marvin loved going to all of the kids’ sporting events, nieces and nephews included.  He would say, “I will be there, just get me a schedule.”

Pop had many hobbies besides hunting and fishing.  He made smoking pipes, even though he didn’t smoke… he made remote controlled airplanes; some flew well, others, not so much.  Woodworking projects for his kids delighted him. He was a brilliant chess player, beating even the most difficult computer opponents.  He loved playing pool with his sons, Darick and Adam.

Marvin enjoyed people. He loved being around his friends, but he cherished his family the most.

Gini was the love of his life for 50 years.  He truly believed that she saved him.  He always said that Gini and her kids gave him purpose and taught him what it meant to love and be loved.

Marvin became a believer and follower of Jesus Christ in 1982 when attending Joliet Baptist Church. He spent countless hours reading and studying scripture, especially prophesy and events of the end times.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years Virgene (Gini) Steadman; step-children Dan (Kathy) Rudig, Rusty (Sharon) Mainwaring, Tim (Sandy) Mainwaring, Tedd Mainwaring, Darick (Deann) Rudig, Rebecca (John) Fraas and son Adam (Michelle) Steadman; brothers Dave Steadman and Sam McClure; sisters Dora Jones and Verna Jo Harris and countless grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marvin is preceded in death by his father, James M. Steadman, mother Anona P. Macy McClure, and brothers Loren E. Steadman and James A. Steadman.

A Memorial service will be held at 11:00am, Saturday, November 6, 2021, with a reception to follow at Berea Baptist Church, 7715 12 Mile Road, Shepherd, MT 59079 and may also be viewed live, online at www.bereabaptist.cc.
