Obituary: Helmueth “Mutt” Leader

Helmueth Leader

Helmueth Leader, lovingly known as “Mutt,” passed from this life on October 4, 2024, in the home he built with his own hands more than 60 years ago. Born on September 11, 1930, in Billings, MT, Helmueth’s life began on a humble family farm in Shepherd, where he grew up without the luxuries of electricity or running water. This formative experience instilled in him a strong work ethic and the ability to “make do” with what he had, no matter how little that was.

Helmueth was the youngest of seven boys born to Fred and Mary (Zingelman) Leader. After his graduation from Shepherd High School in 1948, he made his way out west and spent time in Spokane and Seattle where he worked for Boeing and held various other jobs. Eventually he moved back to Montana, began working as a carpenter, and married Colleen Lind in Billings in 1957. He and Colleen had two sons, Jeff and Tim, before Colleen’s unexpected and untimely death in 1965.

Helmueth’s skilled hands helped build and remodel many homes and structures in the community, including the local bar in Shepherd. He had a remarkable knack for fixing all things broken and was known for modifying items to better suit his needs! Helmueth enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting, fishing, bike riding, and bird watching. He was also a classic car enthusiast. He was particularly fond of Studebakers, but he could identify the year, make, model and engine size of most any classic car he encountered.

In 1970, Helmueth married Rita Depner. Together they had a daughter, Amy Colleen. Rita and Helmueth were there for each other for 48 years, and together they faced the many challenges of old age until she passed away in 2019. Helmueth had a gentle spirit and a warm smile; he will be deeply missed by family and friends.

Helmueth was predeceased by his parents, his daughter-in-law Diane, and all of his brothers: Orville, Art, Everett, Harold, Carl and Norman Leader. Survivors include his son Jeff (Lilly) Leader of Sparks, NV, his son Tim (Cristy) Leader, his daughter Amy (Dean) Wells, granddaughter Jennifer (James) Potter and great granddaughter Cecelia, all of Billings, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service and burial were held on October 15. Memorial contributions may be made to Adult Resource Alliance, Riverstone Hospice or charity of your choice.
