Obituaries: Everett Glenn Lane

Everett Glenn Lane

Everett Glenn Lane, 80, died June 9, 2022.  He was born Christmas Day, 1941 to Elwin George Lane and Maryanna Irene Hamilton Lane at a farmhouse near Fairfield, MT.  His early years included time in Mountain Home, ID; four years at the homestead of his grandmother, Clara Bump, north of Winnett, MT; a year in Brooks, MT, kindergarten and first grade in Lewistown; second grade in Winnett, third and fourth grades in Cat Creek; back to Winnett for fifth grade; sixth grade in Lewistown; and finally back to Winnett long enough to graduate at 18.

After serving with the National Guard, Everett began driving for Hanlon Oil Company hauling crude from Roundup’s Devil’s Basin to the Mosby refinery.  He was working with Ed Livingston Drilling in 1962 when he married Lana Berg.  After moving to Billings and being by hired by Wardell’s Truck Stop, the family increased with the birth of daughter, Barbara.  The establishment of a truck stop/cafe in Jordan, MT by father-in-law, Lloyd Berg, drew the little family there.  The failure of that business resulted in a move back to Billings and Wardell’s followed by a divorce.

1965 brought a new marriage to Mariann Mann and work with the railroad switching cars during the beet season.  He then turned to over-the-road trucking, finally landing work with Studer Construction which he continued for ten years until that company dissolved along with the second marriage.

A chance meeting at a picnic led him to follow Sandra “Sue” Gradle D’Hoey to Glendive when her job transfer occurred.  They married Labor Day weekend 1976, and he became step-father to Mike and Heather D’Hoey.  Everett spent five years with Cenex Transport hauling a variety of products.  In 1983, he purchased a semi and trailer and began hauling road oil in a 500 mile radius of Billings.  The couple welcomed a son, Barry, and appreciated the smaller community until moving back to Billings in 1990.  Sale of the truck and trailer provided funds for “tinkering” toys, two old Fords (a 1941 and 1953) which resulted in many new friendships and adventures.

Everett is survived by his wife, Sue; daughters, Barb Diekman (Steve) and Heather Rahr (Jim); sons, Mike D’Hoey (Toni) and Barry Lane (Amy); grandchildren: Zachery and Caleb Diekman, Ellie and Marlo Lane, James T. and Jesse Rahr; brother, Wesley Davis (Rhonda); and sisters, Guyla Wittmann, Leona Gipe (Jerry) and Jan Berg (Dan).  He was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Anna Marie Clawson and Clara Harris; and brother, Walter Lane.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 24th, 2:00 p.m. at the Creel Funeral Home Chapel in Lewistown, MT, with interment to follow at the Lewistown City Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the care of Creel Funeral Home.  Everett’s family and friends can share memories and condolences at www.creelfuneralhome.com
