Medical Minute Column: AI in Dentistry

Dr. Laighton ones

As technology advances in the world, there are many different new and interesting things available for use in dentistry. Many of these advances have not only increased efficiency and precision, but they can help enhance patient care to make the experience faster, easier, and more comfortable.
Some of the new and interesting technologies available in dentistry are Digital Dentistry and CAD/CAM technology, 3D Printing, Intraoral Scanners, Cone Beam Computed Tomography, Laser Dentistry, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Dentistry.  Over the next several months we may share more on some of these technologies. For now, let’s focus on AI in Dentistry.

Just as AI is transforming many industries across the globe, dentistry is changing and adapting to the many available uses of AI. The integration of AI into dental practices is revolutionizing dental diagnostics, treatment planning, and patient education which improves the overall dental experience. Here are a few ways AI is helping in dentistry.

Enhanced Diagnostics
One of the many applications of AI in dentistry is in diagnostics. AI algorithms can analyze dental images such as X-rays and CT scans with great accuracy. These systems are trained on vast datasets, enabling them to identify issues like cavities and periodontal disease. AI’s ability to detect subtle changes that might not be seen as early by the human eye enhances diagnostic precision, allowing for earlier treatment and better patient care. For example, the average human eye can only detect rarely up to 250 different shades of gray, while computers and AI can detect around 1,000 shades of gray. So, while comparing digital X-rays, AI can recognize differences in gray that may indicate tooth decay that will help the dentist diagnose and treat issues before they become more severe.

Treatment Planning
AI is also playing a role in treatment planning. AI systems can help dentists in developing treatment plans by analyzing patient data and predicting outcomes. In orthodontics, AI-powered software can create precise treatment simulations and predict tooth movement, improving the planning and execution of treatments like braces or clear aligners. This not only enhances the effectiveness of the treatments but also reduces the duration and discomfort associated with them.

Patient Education
AI-driven chatbots and virtual assistants are improving patient engagement and education. These tools can provide patients with instant answers to their questions, guide them through pre- and post-treatment care instructions, and offer educational resources on oral health. By enhancing patient understanding and engagement, AI contributes to improved overall oral health outcomes.

In dentistry, there will probably be many more new and interesting uses for AI. The current uses available are already enhancing the patient experience. While some people may not look forward to going to the dentist, seeing and using new technologies can be fun and exciting. AI in dentistry is one of those exciting things. Diagnostics, treatment planning, and patient education are just a few of the current available uses we have available now. We will all see what tomorrow brings.
