Huntley Project Hires New Football Coach for 2024-25 Season

Kevin Avison

With the upcoming football season and the resignation from Rick Dees as the coach of the Huntley Project High School Football Team, Huntley Project has hired a new head coach to lead the team. Kevin Avison, a teacher at Huntley Project Schools, has been hired for the head coach position at Huntley Project.

With more than fifteen years of coaching experience, Coach Avison is ready to lead the Huntley Project Red Devils for another year of football. Avison spent one year as a college graduate assistant at Dickinson State University coaching defensive backs. After this, he coached seven years of varsity football. After a fifteen-year break from teaching and opening up his own restaurant in Poulson, Montana, he came back to teaching at Huntley Project where he coached the junior high football team for six years and coached as an assistant for the high school football team the last two years. Now, Avison is leading the Red Devils to what will hopefully be a winning season.

When asked about the offensive game plan for this next year, Avison replied, “We are looking to pass more this year, but we still want to establish the run. We have some big boys up front with an athletic backfield.” Avison wants to stay with the Huntley Project tradition with a variation of the misdirection and gap blocking schemes. This being said, he is still looking to stretch people out so they aren’t so tight. “We are going to throw out wide to keep the defense honest,” said Coach Avison.

Defensively, Avison is focusing on tackling and the pass rush. “We want our athletes to fly around and make plays. We have some big guys that will be up front and some fast linebackers that can fill.” The Huntley Project defense will vary based on what they will see every week, but Avison feels that their base defense will be a 3-3.

“I am proud of the players and the dedication that they have shown this summer. Just attending practices, camps, and weight rooms as well as the communication this summer has been great. I think it is going to propel us forward when we hit the ground running come August 16,” Avison states.

When asked about if we will see anything different, Avison responded, “I think you are going to see the same hard-hitting, hard-nosed, Huntley Project football that has been seen in the past. It is a long tradition and I’m hoping to continue that and hopefully get back to the state championship games in the next couple years.”

Assistant coaches for the 2024-25 football season will be Wes Lindeen, Brady Gulde, and Mike Spence.
