Could Nuclear Energy be in Montana’s Future?

An interim study on the feasibility of nuclear power, approved by the 2021 legislative session, took a group of Montana lawmakers to Idaho National Laboratory (INL) on a tour of their facilities in Idaho Falls recently.

Senator Mary McNally (D-Billings) said one of the tasks for lawmakers was to learn about small modular reactors (SMRs) which produce energy on a much smaller scale than past nuclear plants.  McNally stated there are six main designs for SMRs that different organizations are testing and promoting.

In October 2021, Colstrip Power Plant (CPP) in Rosebud County announced its plans to shutter its two remaining units by 2025, which is partly what sparked the interest in nuclear.
