Complacency on traffic laws becoming commonplace

Dear Editor,

I hate to admit this, but I’ve gotten use to people texting and talking on their cell phones while driving. Now, we have people running red lights. If you are in a driving lane and your light turns green, you still better look both ways. I have seen a couple of incidents where, “there but for the grace of God”, no one has gotten hurt. There is a new violation happening on our streets that gives me pause to wonder.

The other day, I was driving down Main Street towards town. As me and some of my fellow drivers were approaching the Lake Elmo Road interchange and hearing a siren, we stopped. Just as the ambulance was coming on to Main Street, flashing lights and siren going, a pedestrian on the west sidewalk of Main Street stepped off the curb and continued walking northbound. Fortunately, the vigilant ambulance driver slammed on his brakes and waited for the pedestrian to finish crossing.

How about we cut costs and make life easier for the police by doing away with these traffic laws and just let helter-skelter prevail? Of course, as soon as someone got killed, the public would demand the city enact laws – which the public will not obey.
