Coming this Fall: Skyview Sports & Weekly News on YCN Radio

by Michael J. Marino

Staff members at Yellowstone County News (YCN) are preparing to launch several new features on their local radio station (101.1 FM KFHW – YCN Radio) according to publisher Jonathan McNiven.

“We’re really excited about adding all of Skyview High School’s sporting events like football, volleyball and basketball, to our line-up of broadcasts,” McNiven stated.

Skyview activities coordinator, Toby Hill, expressed a great deal of excitement as well, and said, “from the very beginning, I was excited about this because we didn’t really have a radio station that made Skyview a priority.” Hill explained that while some stations would cover his students’ games occasionally, it was never as consistent as he would have hoped.

He noted the fact that Skyview is only a little over 30 years old, so in comparison to Senior and West, he feels the “brand” of the school isn’t well-established yet. “The exposure on the radio, I think, is one thing that will really help us,” in terms of marketing the school and getting its name out there, stated Hill.

YCN Sports Radio will continue to broadcast all sporting events for Huntley Project and Shepherd as it did in previous years, which will include broadcaster Anderson McNiven. Anderson, while regularly attending Huntley Project High School, has managed to broadcast over 100 sporting events as well. Others in the industry have recognized Anderson as an “up and coming” sports broadcaster. Ryan Minch, Dave Riley, and two other broadcasters will assist the McNivens to ensure all games are covered.

McNiven also stated that he and YCN staff plan to add a weekly news segment with all the latest headlines from around the county, including information about public meetings, school board meetings, the Sheriff’s Report, On the Record, plus feature stories like YCN Investigates.

Additionally, now that all the right equipment is in place, McNiven said, “the sky is truly the limit.”

YCN launched their sports broadcast page (YCN Sports & Radio) on Facebook to keep listeners up to date and post additional content on Monday, August 8.
