Big Sky State Games hosts Elementary Cross-Country Meet

Big Sky State Games will host an elementary school cross country meet, but it will be different than in years past. In an effort to continue a twelve-year tradition in spite of current restrictions, this year each school can host their own race for students in grades 3, 4, and 5 any time between October 6 to October 31.

The one-mile race will take place on each school’s campus. Individuals can also register for their own race and run it on their own if their school is not hosting a race. All those who participate will receive a t-shirt, a medal, a bib, and a certificate of completion. Registration is available online at yes.bigskygames.org, and the event is free. The first 500 participants to register will receive a gift. The deadline to register is 11:59 PM on October 1st. Any schools who are interested in hosting a race, please email info@bigskygames.org.

Prizes will be awarded to the first, second, and third place winners, and the top three in each age group, gender, and at each school will also receive a Big Sky State Games medal. The Spirit Trophy will be presented to the school with the highest percentage of participants, and the school with the most overall participants will receive the Team Top Dog Award. Runners are encouraged to wear school colors to show their team spirit.

As an individual sport, cross country is one where everyone can participate, and the runners can work towards personal bests and find success in meeting their own goals. A popular event, the organizers hope to introduce a new generation to running and help them have a positive running experience. Last year’s meet had over 1,000 runners.

The organizers would like to thank the major sponsors of the race, including Kohls Cares, St. Vincent Healthcare, Roger Daniel Insurance and ExxonMobil.  Community Sponsors include Yellowstone Rim Runners and Time Out Sports.  The meet is an event of the Big Sky State Games and supported by the Montana Women’s Run.
