Kudos to the Overlooked Workers

Dear Editor,

I’d like to give a “shout-out” to all the overlooked, non-essential workers in America.

First and foremost, as it is currently -9 below zero this morning in Billings as I write this, I’d like to give a shout-out to the gas companies and workers for providing heat in my home, my children’s homes, and even your homes.

While on the subject, I’d like to give a shout-out to the electric companies and their workers who provide electricity to our homes.  Also to the city water department, and their workers who provide essential water in our homes.

Still on the subject of homes, I’ll also give a shout-out to the construction workers and insulation workers who built the home.  A shout-out to all the additional workers who had any part in providing me the comfort I enjoy as I sit in my home writing this.

A shout-out to all grocery stores, their employees who help ensure that food is available every day.   A shout-out to all the restaurants, their cooks, their waitresses/waiters who serve us when we choose to go out for a meal.

A shout-out to those who protect us every day, via the Military or Law Enforcement.  Even a shout-out to the Yellowstone County News for keeping us informed of local news/events etc.

I’m sure by now, you get my point.  I could have shortened this up by saying that we should give a “SHOUT-OUT” to all workers who provide and sort of goods and services across America.

No, I’m not overlooking Health Care workers as we face Covid-19 and other health challenges.  In fact, I’ve long said, well before Covid-19, the profession I admire the most are front line health care workers who face dealing with sick or hurting people day in and day out!

So why write this??  I don’t think we should get in the trap of saying who and what job is more essential than others.  If they “do” the job, whatever the job, I say KUDOS to them and thank them for what they do.  They are NOT, I say NOT, non-essential.
