Construction Begins on Billings Bypass

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) has notified the public of, what are expected to be, brief traffic disruptions on Highway 312 between Shepherd and Billings Heights.  Construction began on the intersection of Five Mile Road and Highway 312 on April 8. Two-way traffic will be maintained during peak commute hours of 7 to 9am and 4 to 6pm. During all other hours drivers should expect some delays while crews install piping and perform preliminary dirt work in preparation for a single-lane roundabout to be installed at the intersection.

Construction is also progressing on Five Mile Road itself, which includes an intersection at Five Mile Road and Dover Road. MDT says to expect minor traffic delays in that area as well.

The Five Mile Road project segment of the Billings Bypass is the first of six project segments to begin construction and, is expected to be completed during the 2020 construction season.

MDT, Montana Contractor’s Association and their construction partners are taking the COVID-19 pandemic very seriously. MDT has implemented several measures to help keep employees, contractors and the public safe during the construction season. MDT says they will follow state and federal guidelines and apply safe practices.

April is National Work Zone Safety Week (April 20-24). MDT has been reminding drivers to pay attention, slow down and be careful as you pass through work zones.
