Billings Police Department officers located and stopped a vehicle, in the area of Bernard, south of Monad on Saturday, February 15, 2020 at 1:12am. The vehicle had fled from officers multiple times earlier that evening.
While officers were giving commands to the occupants, the vehicle suddenly accelerated, drove directly toward the officers, and collided with one of the officers. The collision resulted in serious, non-life threatening injuries to the officer, who was transported by ambulance to local medical facilities for surgery. The officer has not been identified at this time.
The suspect vehicle fled the area northbound before crashing. The 14 year old male driver is a resident of Billings. He was remanded into youth services and charged with Attempted Deliberate Homicide. Occupants of the vehicle fled on foot and all six were apprehended in the area. Five of the six occupants were juvenile females from Billings area, between the ages of 13 and 16.
Initial Tweet information from the BPD indicated the officer who was struck was attempting to deploy stop sticks. That information is not accurate. The officer was giving commands. The vehicle was stopped and was not actively fleeing at the time.
