February is “Black History Month.” Really?

Dear Editor,

Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your loyal readers and subscribers, not the least to mention customers and advertisers. It takes all kinds and all of us to make it work, what ever “it” may be. Me, I like to mix a little play in along the way!

Anyway, February is “Black History Month.” Really? Which month is “Yellow History Month,” or “Red” or “White,” or whatever color? Perhaps the NAACP could clarify, please?

Back to case in point. Growing up watching the civil rights movement, I can remember Willie Mays, the Supremes, Ray Charles, the female officer on Star Trek, Flip Wilson, Henry Aaron, Bill Russell, Frank Robinson, Gale Sayers, Wilt Chamberlain, Charley Pride and the tap dancer on The Laurence Welk Show. Shoot, I’ll even throw in Sidney Potier, Isaac Hayes, George Foreman and O.J. Simpson. Why? Because I thought they were cool. Black was not an issue.

However, along the way, Eddie Murphy, Spike Lee, Muhammed Ali, the Reverend Jesse Jackson, Oprah Winfrey, Brittney Greiner, Kamala Harris, Tiger Woods, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner and Prince have, in my opinion, pushed the envelope to the point of defeating the cause, whatever that was. Civil rights, I thought.

Today, Samuel L. Jackson, Steve Harvey, Breanna Williams, Cedric the Entertainer, Dr. Waden Cruzado (she’s not black/nor white), the late Quincy Jones and Karl “the Mailman” Malone rank high in my book. As does Ichirio Suzuki.

Hope and pray this finds you all well- (if not, trying); and happy-(if not; [hopefully] soon)!

Lord’s Blessings-

Paul Kober
