Happy New Year! It’s that time when we analyze the year before and start with New Year’s resolutions; well, at least for a month or so.  My wife and I have now completed three months of running the Yellowstone County News; a lot has been learned, mistakes have been made, names have been misspelled and learning AP style is a learning curve.

Assessing our procedures and processes, along with business needs, is critical to any successful business.  As we have reviewed our future, this week marks the first that the price of the newspaper is going from 75 cents to $1. Since the price for an individual paper has not been raised for a while, we reviewed other weekly newspapers throughout the state and found similar prices. It’s still cheaper to subscribe to the paper and get all 52 issues delivered in your mailbox each week.

I’ve been hard at work understanding the business needs of the paper.  As a newspaper, we have exciting things in the works which I think our readers will like. Let us know what you think by writing to us or sending a letter to the editor.

Now onto the headlines and this upcoming week: The 2015 Montana Legislative Session kicks off on Jan. 5, and our sister websites, www.lockwoodmontana.com, www.huntleyproject.net and www.shepherdmontana.com  will have links for anyone interested in watching the live broadcasts online at 1 p.m. each day during the session. You can also watch any session or almost any hearing online. It’s a chance to watch your state senator or representative in action and see them voting on subjects that are important to you.

Another top headline referred to the $1.95 per gallon gas prices at Costco in Billings. I’m sure that price will change even as we go to press. As an extra bonus for consumers, I hope gas prices go lower each week. I’ll keep talking about the prices as long as they stay low. Frankly, it was surprising that prices have decreased to this extent, and now to go below $2 per gallon is something to celebrate.

I guess low gas prices may not amount to much for someone who doesn’t drive to work or live in, say New York or D.C., but to everyone who lives in Montana, I’d say, “Keep the low price war going!”
