Obituary: Anthony Blaine DeLeo

Anthony Blaine DeLeo

Anthony Blaine was born on March 10th, 2000 along with his twin brother William. The twins were a true miracle to parents Benjamin DeLeo and Mary Gaines. In the DeLeo family there were several Anthony’s, so he was given the nickname Tony, or Bubba T.  Anthony also grew up with two sisters Carolyn and Ila DeLeo. He attended elementary school at Hobson High school then he later attended high school at Huntley Project, in Worden. Anthony made many life long friends throughout his life, if there was someone who needed a friend, he was the guy for the job.  He was the guy to step up for a job, and go above and beyond. Tony’s laugh, that is a whole story on its own, where he acquired it from, who knows. Where ever he was, there was a funny story to be told, and laughs to be shared. It’s a laugh that none of us will ever forget.  read more

Bias against Bison: a national hypocracy

Dear Editor,

Theodore Roosevelt established the National Bison Range in 1908 to provide “a permanent national bison range for the herd of bison.” The North American Bison has been an animal of spiritual importance and a symbol of cultural heritage for centuries. However, if our national mammal migrates outside of Yellowstone National Park, they’re treated much less like an iconic symbol of American heritage and more like a nuisance. Killing or harming a bald eagle, our national bird, carries maximum penalties of $100,000 in fines and up to one year in prison.

So why are nearly 1,500 bison brutally slaughtered every winter? Our government officials, Secretary Zinke and Governor Bullock allow this killing to occur, instead of allowing bison to roam free as they did for nearly all of history. Not allowing bison to migrate north of Yellowstone National Park is culturally absurd, inherently dangerous, economically hindering, and environmentally irresponsible.

Slimmed down Shepherd Bond is back on the table

At a meeting in the Shepherd High School gymnasium, members of the Shepherd community gathered to listen to Jeff Kanning of Collaborative Design Architects, pitch a new, lower price plan for remodeling and adding on to the Shepherd School.
