DEAR EDITOR,
Don’t know exactly how to say this but – I quit. Writing THE OUTDOORS column these past five years has been fun, and I love sharing about critters and the outdoors. Couple of years ago political comments were added. This amounted to ‘coloring outside the lines’ meaning I should stick to birds and bees and skip the political stuff. Several things came to my attention. Everyone liked the outdoors stuff, but some hated the political stuff. read more

Among increasing water issues for the Worden-Ballantine Yellowstone County Water and Sewer District (WBYC) now includes finding a replacement for full-time WBYC Operator Rick Coyle as he submitted his letter of resignation to the board that was effective last Friday, January 3, due to mounting and documented verbal criticism of him, fellow operators, contractors and an old antiquated water system. read more

City Council saw fresh community representatives sworn in this past Monday evening by Judge Sheila Kolar.
The singular incumbent Roy Neese was accompanied by the four newly elected Council members: Kendra Shaw, Danny Choriki, Pam Purinton and Mike Boyett. Ranging from conservative to democratic socialism this new line-up brings real diversity to the table. read more

Riley Lucinda Knickerbocker
Riley passed away peacefully in the arms of her mom and dad on January 7, 2020. Riley Lucinda Knickerbocker was born on September 13, 2012 to the proud parents Nick and Jessica Knickerbocker.
On February 5, 2015 she became a big sister to her brother Blake who she loved fiercely and will be a big sister to Kassidy due in May. Riley was the best big sister, daughter and friend anyone could ask for. She was always willing to help and loved to play teacher and help others to read and write. Riley absolutely loved music of every genre and she would jam out to it every chance she had. Along with music Riley loved to dance! She was always the first one on the read more

Since Yellowstone County is held liable for the welfare of prisoners once they are admitted into the Yellowstone County Detention Facility, it’s become increasingly apparent to the Sheriff’s Department and other detention administrators that the county must elevate the level of assessment given to prisoners before they are admitted. read more

Early census information reported by the Wall Street Journal found that the population of Montana grew by almost 80,000 in the past decade. Because of this, many analysts are predicting that Montana will be given a second representative in Congress following the release of census results next year. read more

Dec. 31, 2019 at about 7:30 pm, the Billings Police Department Investigations Division became involved in what was initially reported as a fatal car accident west of Billings on Molt road. The accident on Molt road was reported earlier in the day on Dec. 31, 2019. read more

Richard Seder, 81, of Ballantine, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend, died peacefully December 27, 2019 in Billings. He was born November 1, 1938 in Dayton, Wyoming to Henry and Katherine (Lehman) Seder. Richard attended and graduated from Hardin High School. read more

Ellen D. Carlson
Early Christmas morning Ellen D. Carlson passed peacefully, entering Heaven on the biggest and best birthday celebration of all. She was born in Billings on February 10th, 1931, to Daniel E. Nelson and Ellen D. Nelson (Flynn). She was the second youngest of 7 siblings. She graduated from Billings Central Catholic High School in 1949 and shortly thereafter married Hans Carlson in August of 1949. They were married for 61 years. From this reunion a daughter, Christina Lynn, was born, and later a granddaughter, Jena, and then two great grandchildren Ellen and Rylan. She was proud to have her great granddaughter carry on her name and was excited to finally have a boy born into the family, Rylan.

I became a commissioned officer in the USAF in September 1966. I remembered the orders that I received right after I was commissioned stating “pipeline SEA”. Of course SEA meant South East Asia. In December 1966, I was starting flight training in Texas. read more

At a Billings City Council meeting this week, Billings Police Chief Rich St. John presented John Putz with the Billings Police Department’s Outstanding Citizen Award for saving the life of a woman in Pioneer Park on June 29th after she was electrocuted by an exposed power line. read more

Mallerie Stromswold, a high school senior at Billings Senior High, has thrown her hat in the ring to be the Republican candidate for the Montana House of Representatives’ House District 50 seat. That seat contains a chunk of midtown Billings, mostly comprised of the area between Broadwater Ave. and Central Ave. from Montana Ave. to N. 24th St., as well as a portion of the South Side centered around Highland Park. It has been held by Democratic Rep. Jade Bahr since her 2018 victory over Quentin Eggart. read more
