State pension dilemma causing headaches for Montana legislature

Six state legislators – three Republicans and three Democrats – have formed a coalition to address the looming problem of funding the state’s retirement funds for public employees. Five of those legislators were in Billings last week to gather input from city, school and county officials regarding the problems that surround the issue and to hopefully gather support to motivate other political factions to take the matter seriously. read more

State pensions outgrow funds due to over-estimated return rates

The next session of the Montana State Legislature will be facing a really big problem – one that will eventually fall to Montana taxpayers to resolve.

Montana’s retirement funds for teachers and for public employees face a $4.5 billion shortfall. The issue is one that will be a matter of discussion with city and county officials in a series of meetings on Friday being organized by Tom Burnett, (R) Montana House of Representatives, District 6,  and Jim Hamilton, (D) Montana House of Representatives, District 61. read more

Local Legislator rejects Leadership call to resign after hateful remarks

Rodney Garcia is refusing to resign after making threatening, hateful remarks about Democratic Socialists.

A local Billings Republican legislator, Representative Rodney Garcia, has attracted national attention for comments he made last Friday at the MT Republican Winter Kickoff meeting in Helena during a question and answer period. Garcia referred to the Constitution as his basis for his comments in that it is unacceptable to be a socialist and that they should be “jailed or shot.” State Representative Rodney Garcia said that there are a lot of socialists in Billings and alluded that he does not want them around.   read more

In the morning hours of January 27, 2020 Leta Flo (Raymond) Drinkwalter quietly departed this world from her apartment at the Wyndstone in Billings, MT.

Rule of Law in not in the Constitution for a reason

Dear Editor,

In my last letter I gave you the reasons why the due process of law clause found in the fifth amendment to the U.S. Constitution refers to the law that was in effect when the amendment was written by our founders. The purpose of this letter is to point out that the due process of law clause was not meant to mean the rule of law. All of the progressives I have talked to and some of those who consider themselves conservatives believe that those clauses are identical. read more

Obituary: Gerald “Rawhide” Bernhardt

Gerald “Rawhide” Bernhardt

Gerald “Rawhide” Bernhardt, of Billings, passed away January 24, 2020. He was born to George and Lydia (Fox) Bernhardt on September 15, 1942.

Gerald attended Billings Senior High School. On 2/28/1964 Gerald married Janice Marie Haugrud, they later divorced.  

“Rawhide” was a welder for the Sugar Company for 26 years and had a reputation for slinging quite a bead. After that he farmed for many years and loved growing things as he kept a garden it seemed, wherever he went. Gerald enjoyed fishing, camping, motorcycles and snowmobiling.

Survivors include his son Christopher Scott Bernhardt and wife Heidi, daughter Shantel Marie Oblander and her husband Rocky, 12 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren. He was proceeded in death by his parents and brother Donald. No services are planned per Gerald’s wishes but the family would like to recognize his many friends and acquaintances that stopped in to check on him

MFPE Union pay raise contract finalized with Yellowstone County

A contract has been reached between the Montana Federation of Public Employees (MFPE) and Yellowstone County.

According to Human Resources Director Dwight Vigness the union has agreed to a three-year contract, the primary focus of which is to raise worker wages at lower levels to the mid-point range of the pay scale. The agreement comes after the two parties entered into arbitration in mid-December, after having negotiated for ten weeks prior to that. read more

Downtown Huntley is experiencing a business boom with new buildings, business expansions and new names that will be coming to the local area.  Building and business expansions are a good sign that the economy is looking to a bright future as more options are available to the local community. read more
