Dear Editor,

Now that the election season is full upon us I, like you, have had my mailbox jammed full with large and glossy pieces of light cardboard informing me about the merits and flaws of the various candidates. While I am glad that the post office is making money off of politicians instead of having politicians trying to de-fund the post office, I have been concerned to learn many things about the candidates that I could not have imagined just a month or two ago. This is especially disconcerting because, due to a life of 30 some years in Montana politics, I know most of the candidates personally. read more

Officer-Involved Fatal Shooting in Billings

On Monday, October 12, 2020, at about 10:20 PM, officers with the Billings Police Department were dispatched to the 2200 block of Avenue C for suspicious activity. The caller stated that three individuals arrived in two different cars and were acting suspiciously in the complex covered-parking area in the alley. Upon the officers’ arrival, they contacted three suspects to identify them and find out what they were doing. read more

Frederick “Fred” Cleveland

Frederick “Fred” Cleveland ,77, of Billings died on September 27.  Fred was born April 6, 1943, to Jean and Fred Cleveland.  He graduated in 1961 from Billings Senior High School and served in the U.S. Navy until 1964.  He married Rae Rhodes in 1963 (they later divorced), and had a son, Michael, in 1969. read more

Felton Threatens to Renew COVID Restrictions

Yellowstone County could once again face social restrictions if the number of cases of COVID-19 continues to climb, warned County Health Officer John Felton during a press conference this week. If the number of new COVID cases in Yellowstone County reaches 565 for any seven-day period, Felton said he will impose mandates that limit groups to 24 or less and restrict restaurants to 25 percent of capacity. read more

The Ballots are Out: Avoid Common Mail-in-Mishaps

Ballots for the general election will be mailed out this Friday to every active voter in Yellowstone County. An active voter is one who has been participating in elections or whose ballots have not been returned as undeliverable by the post office. According to Bret Rutherford, Election Administrator for Yellowstone County, the number of ballots being sent is approximately 90,000. The 2020 Federal General Election will be run as an all-mail ballot election in Yellowstone County. Polling places will NOT be open on Election Day, Nov. 3, 2020.  read more

Obituary: Gary K. Franklin

Gary Keith Franklin passed on to the Father and reunited with his wife early Monday morning September 21, 2020.  Gary has joined his wife of 43 years, Bess Laird Franklin, who passed November 2, 2019.   Gary was born in Eureka, Montana, on July 21,,1947, was raised in Fortine, and following high school enlisted in the Navy. read more
