by Michael J. Marino

Protesters gathered Friday, March 31 in downtown Billings to voice their opposition of SB 99, a bill which prohibits gender-affirming medical care for minors in Montana and threatens doctors with a penalty if they go against the bill’s provisions. SB 99 passed the state Senate by a vote of 32-17 on March 29, and is now pending the Governor’s signature or veto.

In total, around 100 people came together on the lawn of the Yellowstone County Courthouse with signs like “Together We Rise” and “Bans Off Our Bodies.” One protester’s sign read, “Even if you hate us, we still love you. Love wins.”

Bailey Desper, a human rights advocate, organized Friday’s protest and said it was held “in tandem with other protests across the United States.” She said the goal was “to be out here, and be loud for Trans Day of Visibility.”

Desper said her reaction to the approval of SB 99 was one of disappointment. “It made me feel like the American Dream is really just a sales pitch… and I’m tired of being that product,” she said. One of Desper’s goals is “to see equality be the law of the land at some point in my lifetime.” read more

Legislative Update: Week 12

by Rep. Kerri Seekins-Crowe
Conservatives vehemently defend the right to life, and we are continuing to fight for that foundational right this 68th session.  We have heard several important bills designed to protect unborn children.  One bill prevents tax dollars from funding abortions. Another prevents abortions of viable unborn children.  A third bill adopts the Infant Safety and Care Act.  Collectively, these bills will help to limit abortions to only the most extreme circumstances, thus, protecting our most vulnerable Montana citizens.

The Magic City Marmots, a Billings rugby team, held their first game of the season taking on the Missoula Maggots, on Saturday, March 18 at Rose Park.

Both teams played with intensity, but Missoula won with a score of 43-17. Players reported the Marmots were in good spirits despite the loss, and the two teams went to dinner with each other at Pepper’s after the matchup.

The game of rugby was first developed in the early 1800s in England by students at Rugby School. It is a “rough and tumble” close contact sport, ironically also known as “football,” and it is not for the faint of heart.

Lane Lyseng is a Marmot player and serves as President for the Montana Rugby Club. Lyseng said the club is comprised of six teams from around the state including the Magic City Marmots – who used to be known as the Billings Bulls. read more
