The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) selected Huntley Project Head Volleyball Coach, Iona Stookey, among 22 other coaches across the U.S. for the 2021-22 National Coach of the Year award on Jan. 16. Prior to this, Stookey had been named Volleyball Coach of the Year for the fall 2022 season by the Montana High School Association (MHSA).
The NFHS “honors coaches in the top 10 girls’ sports and top 10 boys’ sports (by participation numbers), and in two ‘other’ sports – one for boys and one for girls – that are not included in the top 10 listings. The NFHS also recognizes a spirit coach as a separate award category.”
Stookey was recognized as one of the “most elite coaches in the country,” according to the letter she received from the association. Honorees were selected for their “coaching performance, lifetime win-loss record, community involvement, school involvement, and philosophy of coaching.”
