Lawmakers Sworn In, Set Hearings for Over 4,000 Pending Bills

Elected officials from across the state gathered in Helena on Monday, Jan. 2 and were sworn in for the 2023 Regular Session of Montana Legislature.

Republicans were afforded a supermajority by voters in November, meaning they have majority control of both the House and Senate. Party leaders said after the swearing ceremony their priorities include inflation, affordable housing, and cost of living concerns.

Both parties appear to be making the most of this session with a record 4,405 bill draft requests which are now pending according to legislature website. To compare, the 2021 session saw an average of 3,367 draft requests and a mere 2,607 in the session of 2019. Only about half of drafts end up being introduced on the floor as a bill, on average. So far in this year’s session, 280 drafts have been introduced and scheduled for hearing.
