A forum held ahead of the June 7 election allowed voters to ask this year’s candidates for Yellowstone County Commissioner – incumbent Denis Pitman and his opponent Mark Morse – questions regarding the issues facing the area.
On crime and the addiction epidemic facing Montana, Pitman stated the county does need to build a larger jail, but added, “more importantly, we need to reform our entire judicial system.”
Stopping the revolving door of the criminal justice system where it begins is the real solution, according to Pitman.
Morse said crime will be a top priority for him if elected. He said law enforcement, judges, mental health agencies, and other such agencies have started the reform process, and further said “now we need to grab the bull by the horns, and cross the finish line.” Morse believes he has the right credentials to accomplish that.
Both candidates admitted that there has been no consensus yet regarding the possible privatization of MetraPark, but encouraged the community to comment. “We need public input,” Morse stated. He further said the people in Yellowstone County must tell the commissioners what they want to do with Metra.
On marijuana: Pitman said he was willing to learn about medical cannabis when it was first brought to the Board of Commissioner’s attention a few years back.
