County Commissioners Approve New Budget

Yellowstone County Commissioners approved the 2021-22 Fiscal Year budget on Tuesday, after amending it to reduce the number of requested FTE’s by eight.

The $143 million budget includes the $15.6 million in ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) funding to the county, which makes the total appear larger than it really is, explained Director of Finance for the county, Kevan Bryan.

Bryan said he plans the budget conservatively, projecting expenses higher than is likely and revenues lower.  It is actually more balanced than it appears at first glance, he said.

This year’s mill levy has been increased only .16 mills.  Total mills last year were 121.99 mills, while this year it will be 122.83.

Estimated tax revenues in the next fiscal year is $58 million.

Bryan said the budget is sound and will be able to accommodate some $1.3 million in demolition and abatement work that will have to be done in the county’s newly purchased Miller Building.  The county closed on the Miller Building last week.  It will serve the future growth of county departments, including the departments that are currently located in the Stillwater Building, where the county is leasing space.
