City Council Asks Only for Prohibition

of the Sale of Marijuana within City Limits

In last week’s issue of the Yellowstone County News a portion of the article about the City of Billings putting the matter of legalizing the recreational use of marijuana on the ballot was in error.

The ballot question approved by the City Council asks only for approval of an ordinance that would prohibit adult-use of marijuana dispensaries within the city limits of Billings. Dispensary “means a licensed premises from which a person licensed by the Montana Department of Revenue may sell marijuana or marijuana products to both registered cardholders and adults that are 21 years or older.” The restriction “would not prohibit the operation of medical marijuana dispensaries within the City of Billings.”

The paragraph in last week’s article that was in error stated: “They will ask the voters to weigh in on whether to allow the cultivation of marijuana, the manufacturing of marijuana-based goods, the dispensing of medical marijuana, the dispensing of recreational marijuana, dispensing both types of marijuana (recreational and medical), setting up testing facilities for marijuana, and/or the transportation of marijuana products.”

There will not be multiple questions on the ballot. There will be only one question on the ballot: “Shall dispensaries of adult use marijuana, commonly referred to as recreational-use marijuana, be permitted within the limits of the City of Billings?”

The resolution states, “a majority of the electors voting on this question must approve the proposed ordinance to prohibit adult-use marijuana dispensary businesses…”
