Coach Croy throws in the towel

With less than a week to go before Huntley Project football team camp starts on July 22nd, it came as a bit of a shock this week to hear that seven-year head coach Guy Croy was announcing his resignation effective immediately.

Athletic Director Tim Bastian confirmed that Croy had informed him of the decision late on Monday evening and said, “It was nothing that Guy did, it was just philosophical differences with the administration.” Croy had been head coach of the Red Devils football team for seven years and also served as Athletic Director until he resigned from the position last year, with Bastian stepping into that position. Less than 24 hours after resigning from the football program, Croy informed the school that both he and his wife will also be leaving their teaching positions in the school. Croy said that after a meeting with the administration last week, he had daily conversations with both his family and his coaching staff before reaching the decision to depart Huntley Project on Monday evening. He says that neither of them are sure where they will end up, but they are looking for the next step in their lives. He would like to thank those who have supported him and his family for the last seven years and says he appreciates the support that has been pouring in.

Under Croy Huntley Project was an annual contender, making it to the playoffs in all but his first year as head coach in 2012 and bringing the team to two state championship games – in 2014 and 2015 – during his tenure. “He’s done a lot of great things for this school and this program,” Bastian said, “we’d like to thank him for everything that he has done.”

With Croy gone so soon before football season officially launches with practices beginning on August 16th, Huntley Project is in the unenviable position of having to replace a successful head coach in a very short time. The school is first opening up the position to school district employees before looking outside and hope to have a new coach hired within the next couple weeks.
