Experimental aircraft crash kills pilot at Billings airport

BILLINGS — A 74-year-old man was killed Wednesday when the gyrocopter he was flying crashed into a hangar at Billings Logan International Airport.

Airport officials said in a release that the man, who was not identified pending notification of his family, was alone in the aircraft when it crashed on the west end of the airport at about 1 p.m.

“Details are still being sorted out as there were no witnesses to the incident,” the release said.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were en route to investigate the incident.

A gyrocopter is a rotary wing aircraft, often with an open cockpit. It looks similar to a helicopter but its rotors are air-driven rather than powered by the aircraft motor.
