Former State Legislator from Billings to Co-Chair Republicans for Tester Group

Mallerie Stromswold

Senator Jon Tester’s campaign has launched a new support group, Republicans for Tester. With Montana likely to go red in the presidential election, Tester’s chances of re-election seem to lie in his ability to get Republican voters to split their ballots between President Trump and himself.

One of 16 Co-Chairs of this new committee is a former state legislator from Billings, Mallerie Stromswold. She joins former Governor Mark Racicot, former Montana Secretary of State Bob Brown, and a handful of other former state and local politicians.

Former State Rep. Stromswold is the only Co-Chair to come from Yellowstone County, with the majority coming from the western half of the state.

Stromswold represented House District 50, covering parts of western Billings, while attending Montana State University. Elected at just 19 years old, Stromswold served as a Republican, although she is a self-proclaimed Libertarian. She often voted against her party, including voting to allow transgender athletes to compete in the category of their choosing, as well as to allow gender reassignment surgery for minors.

Stromswold resigned in January of 2023, just two months after being re-elected to a second two-year term, citing mental health concerns and a soured relationship with the Republican caucus.

The race for Senator Tester’s seat may well decide the Senate majority for at least the next two years.
