Huntley Project School Hires Windy Boy as Boys Basketball Coach

Huntley Project (HP) School District voted to hire three individuals for positions for the 2023-24 school year at a special meeting of the school board held Monday, July 31.

The board approved Buddy Windy Boy to hire as Head Boys’ Basketball Coach, pending a background check since he is not currently a district employee. Windy Boy previously served as a coach for Laurel High girls’ basketball, and before that, he coached boys at Plenty Coups High School.

Windy Boy told YCN some might describe his coaching style as “old-fashioned,” because he sticks to a simple strategy based on “in-your-face” defense and “applying pressure the whole game.” The coach further said he teaches his student athletes to focus on being a “student” first, prioritizing their academic requirements above all else.

In addition to his coaching experience, Windy Boy is a U.S. Navy veteran who served five years, stationed on both the USS Abraham Lincoln and USS Truman as a specialist in mechanics and hydraulics. He was one of 24 invited to try out for the All-Navy Basketball Team in 2001.

The school board also hired Ashley Weigum, a Huntley Project graduate, as a Speech and Drama Assistant. Weigum is a current employee of the district and a student at Arizona State University, studying International Public Health.

In Feb. 2018, Weigum took sixth place in Original Oratory for HP at the State Speech & Drama Championship, YCN reported.

For the open paraprofessional job, staff recommended (and the board approved) Sharena Hanshaw. Hanshaw’s employment is dependent upon a pending background check as she is not a current HP employee.
